Savings Goal Calculator

This calculator tells you the exact monthly deposit needed to hit a savings target by a specific date. Enter your goal amount, your deadline, any money you already have saved, and the APY you expect to earn. The tool works backward from your target, accounting for compound interest on every deposit along the way.

How It Finds Your Monthly Amount

The tool reverses the standard future value formula. Instead of starting with a deposit and projecting forward, it starts with your end goal and solves for the regular contribution needed each month. Say you want to save $25,000 for a home down payment in three years. You already have $3,000 in a savings account earning the APY you enter. The calculator first grows your existing $3,000 forward to the deadline. It then determines how much the remaining gap requires in equal monthly deposits, factoring in the interest each deposit earns along the way. The result updates instantly when you adjust any input. Shorten the deadline, and the monthly amount rises. Raise the APY or add to your starting balance, and it drops. This lets you test different timelines and interest assumptions until you find a plan that fits your actual budget.

Milestone Dates Keep You on Track

A single target months or years away can feel abstract. That is why the calculator breaks the journey into checkpoints. After computing your monthly deposit, it maps out when you will cross 25%, 50%, and 75% of your goal. Using the $25,000 example, you would see the approximate dates when your balance passes $6,250, $12,500, and $18,750. These milestones serve as reality checks. If you fall behind a checkpoint, you know to increase deposits early rather than scrambling at the end. Savers on personal-finance forums often mention that tracking intermediate milestones makes large goals feel less overwhelming. A $25,000 target is daunting on day one, but watching the balance pass the halfway mark provides real momentum to keep going. You can also use the milestones to set up automatic transfer increases at each checkpoint.

Results assume a fixed APY for the entire period. If your rate changes or you miss a deposit, revisit the calculator and adjust your plan.
