CD Ladder Calculator

This calculator helps you build a CD ladder by splitting your deposit across multiple CDs with staggered maturity dates. Enter your total amount, the number of rungs, and the APY for each term length. The tool shows when each rung matures and how much total interest you earn across the full ladder.

How a 5-Rung Ladder Works

A CD ladder spreads your money across several CDs that mature at different times. A classic 5-rung setup puts equal portions into 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 4-year, and 5-year CDs. When the 1-year CD matures, you reinvest it into a new 5-year CD. After the initial build-out period, one rung matures every year, giving you regular access to a portion of your money. Take $15,000 split evenly into five rungs of $3,000 each. Rung one matures in 12 months. Rung five matures in 60 months. Each year, you either withdraw the matured amount or roll it into a new 5-year CD at whatever rate is available then. The ladder balances two competing needs: earning higher rates typically offered on longer-term CDs while maintaining periodic access to your funds. You are never more than 12 months away from a maturity event.

When a Ladder Beats a Single CD

A single 5-year CD might offer a slightly higher rate than the average across your ladder rungs. But it locks up all your money for the full term. If you need funds before maturity, early withdrawal penalties often three to six months of interest eat into your returns. A ladder reduces that risk. With one rung maturing each year, you have natural liquidity without penalties. If rates rise during the build-out period, each new reinvestment captures the higher rate. If rates fall, you still hold older rungs locked at the previous higher rate. Savers on personal-finance forums often describe the ladder as the CD strategy that handles uncertainty in either direction. It does not chase the highest possible yield, but it avoids the worst-case scenario of locking everything at a rate that quickly becomes uncompetitive.

The calculator uses the APY you enter for each rung. Actual CD rates vary by bank and term length. Confirm current rates with your bank before locking in.
